Acceptable ID Types for Iowa

Registered voters in Iowa must show ID at the polls. Valid forms of identification include;

  • Iowa driver’s license
  • Iowa non-driver ID card
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military ID
  • Tribal ID
  • Veteran's ID
  • Voter ID card

You can also prove your identity through an out-of-state license, employee card or student ID card. Similarly, you can prove your residence through lease, utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or government check. Finally, another voter may attest to your identity as an Iowa voter.

 

What happens when you go to vote without an ID

If the voter has no acceptable form of ID, they may cast a provisional ballot and will be contacted by their elections office as to whether further action and identification needs to be provided after Election Day in order for their vote to count.
