Acceptable ID Types for Colorado

Colorado voters must show valid ID when voting in person.

Most voters do not need to submit a copy of their ID when voting by mail, but signature must match the signature on voter registration form. First time voters, and occasionally others on request, will need to submit a copy of their ID with their mail-in ballot. Look to see if "ID requested" is noted on your mail-in ballot when it is delivered. If you are using a photo ID, make sure that it is a Colorado ID - if your ID is not issued by Colorado, use another option with up to date info.

Valid forms of ID include:

  • A current Colorado driver’s license or ID card
  • A current U.S. passport
  • A current Medicare or Medicaid card
  • Certified U.S. birth certificate or naturalization document
  • Group residential care facility verification
  • Tribal certificate
  • Name and address on copy of utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or government document including check within the last 60 days

  • A current US military or veteran ID with photo
  • A current student ID issued by a postsecondary school in Colorado with photo
  • Verification of group residential facility
  • Pilot's License
  • Revenue ID Card

  • Written correspondence form County Sheriff that person is confined

What happens when you go to vote without an ID

If you do not have an ID, you can vote using a provisional ballot. Your local election official will use your signature to verify your registration and, as long as all is correct, your ballot will be counted.

If your mail ballot is rejected because of failure to enclose a requested  photocopy of an acceptable form of ID with your ballot you may use Colorado’s TXT2Cure system, email, fax, mail drop off your ID at the county clerk’s office. The ID must be received within 8 days of Election Day to be verified in order for the voter’s ballot to be counted.
