How Vote By Mail Works in Nebraska

Voting by mail is a two step process in Nebraska. Step 1: Request your ballot NOW. The deadline for your application to be received is October  28th. Step 2: Complete and return your ballot ASAP.

  • Return in person to your county elections office on or before November 8th at 8 p.m. CST.
  • Or stamp and mail your ballot to your county elections office so that it is received by November 8th. We recommend mailing your ballot at least two weeks before as the post office is not always reliable. The best intentions or postmark will not matter if your ballot is received after November 8th - your ballot will not count.

You may vote by mail for any reason

You don’t need an excuse to request an absentee ballot. You can vote by mail for any reason.

Remember to Sign Your Return Ballot

After you complete your ballot, sign the outside of the return envelope. Be sure that your signature matches your signature on file with the state! If you registered online or at the DMV, check the signature on your license. If the signature does not match, your ballot could be tossed and will not count.

Use The Right Form of ID

If voting by mail, you do not need to provide ID, but your signature will be compared to the signature on the voter registration form.

Make Sure Your Mail-in Vote Counts

Click here to track your ballot. Your state offers electronic, barcode ballot tracking services so you can make sure your ballot gets counted. Your state does not offer voters a chance to address challenges to their ballot. Your ballot will not count if it is late, or you do not follow directions.

Haven't used your ballot?

If you vote early in-person and do not have the ballot you requested, you will be required to complete a replacement ballot affidavit before a new ballot is issued. If you are voting at your polling place on election day, you will be required to complete a provisional ballot and form.
