About three weeks ago we posted an entry about the Restore the Gulf campaign, however some new info has come to light. DeSmog Blog reports that the campaign is backed by polluting big oil companies with questionable motives.
The campaign is sponsored by nonprofit group Women of the Storm which is in turn sponsored by Americas WETLAND Fooundation, what DeSmog Blog calls a “front group” started by Shell Oil in 2002, and funded by many other oil companies including BP.
At first the campaign seemed commendable: clean up the gulf and guarantee that it remains clean for future generations. However not everyone shares an opinion on who should foot the bill. High hopes for the campaign have come into question given the oil giants’ questionable motivation in producing this ad: DeSmog Blog postures that this is simply a greenwashed campaign by the oil companies to pin the expense of cleanup on taxpayers through legislation, and duck responsibility themselves.
Sandra Bullock has asked the campaign to no longer use her endorsement. Her publicist issued the following statement:
“Ms. Bullock was originally contacted through her attorney to be a part of the PSA in order to promote awareness of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. At no time was she made aware that any organization, oil company or otherwise had influence over Women of the Storm or its message. We have immediately asked for her participation in the PSA be removed until the facts can be determined. Her commitment to the Gulf region has been apparent for many years and she will continue to pursue opportunities that will bring awareness and support to the plight of the Gulf region.”
