Getting Americans involved in politics through music is what HeadCount is all about and recently, our friends over at The League of Young Voters Education Fund have done just that with an official mixtape release.
“Vote for the Hood Vol. 1” is a creative hip hop EP that speaks to the issues in inner city communities. It features upcoming hip hop artists known in the underground world for making a difference and being politically conscious. Artists like Dee-1 from New Orleans and Fowl, the 2011 Red Bull Emcee Champion from Detroit, contributed to the tape; both are local heroes in their respective towns for talking about issues of importance. Watching these artists taking a stand for something bigger than rap is a great way to show that the genre may be moving in the right direction.
Not only does The League of Young Voters value the importance of voter registration like we do, The League also supports other issues that impact the inner city. For about 10 years The League of Young Voters has confronted gun violence in neighborhoods that even some local police wouldn't enter. When they are not fully focused on voter registration, The League continues to “organize their constituents around issues that make sense to young people. By focusing on relevant local issues like juvenile justice, green jobs and electoral access” as stated on their website.
