RockforLife’s List of ‘Pro-Abort’ Bands

Like HeadCount, the right-to-life group RockforLife seeks to engage young people in politics through music. And while RockforLife condemns the murder of late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, who was gunned down Sunday while serving as an usher in his Kansas church, on its website, the organization still provides an alphabetized list of “pro-abortion bands.”

That list includes the Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Phish, Sheryl Crow, Soundgarden, the Donnas, the Bangles, Ween, Spearhead, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, and others. To get on the list, a band doesn’t exactly have to wear “I had an abortion!” T-shirts in concert. From RockforLife.com: “There are many reasons for a band to be on our pro-abortion bands list. Some of them donate money or play concerts to raise money for Planned Parenthood, Rock for Choice, Voters for Choice, Axis of Justice, America Coming Together, PunkVoter.com, Air Traffic Control Project, or other pro-abortion causes.” Phish, for example, performed a benefit for Gloria Steinem's Voters For Choice organization in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1995 – and haven't played a benefit since.

I didn’t recognize any of the names on RockforLife’s equally long list of “pro-life” bands, although Hand of Onan certainly piques my curiosity. Nonetheless, with murder in the air, bands labeled “pro-abortion” might want to know that just as Dr. Tiller was, they too are on a list.

Debra is the lead singer/guitarist for Devi, “a ferocious guitar-driven power trio equally adept at sprawling psychedelic jams and terse, haunting three-minute rockers." (Lucid Culture)
