Phish and Richards Both Smokin’

After Phish performed “Loving Cup” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’s last night, there was a loud sound and a little commotion. No, it wasn’t applause. It was a fire alarm, set off by none other than the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards smoking in his dressing room. Undeterred, the legendary guitarist then came out to film on a promotional segment with Fallon – lit cigarette in hand.

Richards was a guest on the show as part of a Rolling Stones week, honoring the Exile on Main Street album, which is being re-released in a digitally remastered version. A different band appeared each night playing a cover of a song from the album, kicking off with Green Day (“Rip This Joint” ) and followed by Keith Urban (“Tumbling Dice”) and Sheryl Crow (“All Down the Line”). All were good, but Phish had a little advantage because they’d been playing “Loving Cup” for more than 17 years.  They also played Exile in it’s entirety over Halloween weekend in California at Festival 8.

For phans who have seen Phish play “Loving Cup” more times than they can count, the highlight on the Fallon show might have been Keith Richards himself introducing the band.
