Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, 20 others provide music to Patagonia environmental project

Environmentally-conscious apparel brand Patagonia announced a program today to sell exclusive music by Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, moe., Umphrey's McGee and many others, with all proceeds donated to environmental charities of the artists' choice.

The tracks from Patagonia Music Collective cost $0.99 apiece in MP3 format. Twenty-two tracks are available as individual iTunes downloads or two  bundled album compilations (11 tracks apiece). All of the songs are exclusive – you can only get ‘em by chipping in your dollar.

This new program is the brainchild of Yvon Chouinard, the rock climber and businessman who founded both Patagonia and the 1% for the Planet program (through which businesses donate 1% of their profits to environmental causes). Rather than just a download campaign, he says, the PMC should be a way for bands, fans and environmentalists to engage one another. In a Billboard article, Chouinard expresses hope that “other musicians will see that by just donating a song they can easily provide their favorite environmental group with a new stream of financing.”

moe. provided a brand new song called "One Life" written by guitarist Chuck Garvey. He told Jambands.com that, while the song was not written with the Patagonia project in mind, it touches on "themes of living more simply and ecological." Sales of that track will support Water.org.
