Happy Birthday Apple App Store

The Apple App Store celebrates its first birthday this week by gathering some of its favorite games and apps on iTunes. Among the top of the list are apps for Pandora Radio and the Midomi Music Identifier and Search, both clutch for music fans.

The store’s official launch date was July 11, 2008 following some earlier leaks. During that short amount of time, Apple claims more than 50,000 applications and 1 billion downloads.

Also on the list of Apple’s favorites are apps for The Sims 3, MLB.com At Bat, and BeejiveIM 3.0, which helps you to stay in touch with your instant messaging buddies. The list goes on and on, of course, and there’s no doubt the company has revolutionized the industry. What are some of your favorites?

Personally, my vote for one of the best new uses of an iPhone goes out to the crew over at @phishtube on Twitter. These guys have been broadcasting live Phish shows from their iPhone on USTREAM, creating quite a frenzy among the many who couldn’t make it to the shows. (I feel obliged to extend special thanks here to an otherwise unsung hero in the initial broadcasting enterprise: Headlamp Derek. Who knows what would have happened if you hadn’t so graciously given up your batteries for the greater good!) I have no idea how they do it. But hey, it’s still cool!
