Their mission is to create a massive coalition of allies. In the LGBTQ world, an “ally” is a person who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, and actively challenges homophobia and transphobia. TAC believes that it is the responsibility of allies to support LGBTQ causes and fight against discrimination through education, awareness and advocacy.
Allies can become members of the coalition for as little as five bucks, and upload videos or photos to the organization’s website, explaining why they support LGBTQ rights.
By using the power and influence of their friends in the music, fashion and entertainment industry, they hope bring light to, and ultimately eliminate, the various issues affecting those in the LGBTQ community today. TAC was founded by the band in conjunction with fashion designer Rachel Antonoff, sister of guitarist Jack Antonoff.
In an open letter on the TAC website, Antonoff said:
“the ally coalition is also a place where YOU can go and make YOUR VOICE heard. We’ve realized that there are so many people out there who want to go on record and make a statement as an ally, but don’t necessarily have a place or support system to go out and do it. I’ve spoken directly with so many people at shows and online about how hard it is to make a statement when you don’t have anyone in your corner supporting you. TAC is a place where we as allies can make our statements and make them clear, together.”
