LOCAL/REGIONAL/TRAVELING POSITIONS
Our 2008 voter registration campaign will be managed on the ground by approximately 65 team leaders. This position involves every aspect of manageing a voter registration operation on-site, and leading a team in a local market (or traveling from show to show on a particular concert tour). Team leaders are expected to hold a meeting with prospective volunteers in their home market, deal directly with venues and promoters, take responsibilities for supplies and supply management, and assign volunteers at least 10 days in advance of each event. Most importantly, the team leader is responsible for training volunteers on site and supervising the voter registration outreach at concerts. Following each concert event, the Team Leader is responsible for mailing voter registration forms to HeadCount's central office, and filing a detailed report. This is a demanding position and, as the title indicates, requires outstanding leadership skill. It also requires problem-solving ability, a high level of personal accountability, and maturity. Another important requirement is the ability to arrive at concerts in the early evening, prior to doors opening to the general public. Therefore, people who regularly work late or do not have access to transportation should apply for positions within HeadCount other than the Team Leader position.
Touring Team Representative
It’s the summer dream gig. Register voters at concerts on an entire concert tour. Touring Team Representatives travel from concert-to-concert with major HeadCount-affiliated acts such as Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson. You will be joined by 1-3 other HeadCount representatives and attend every concert on a given tour, setting up a voter registration table at each and encouraging concertgoers to register. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a summer in an incredible environment, registering thousands of voters and being on the frontlines of the youth voter movement.
HeadCount provides a vehicle, gas, hotel and other necessities to cover food and incidental expenses. We also provide all the materials and resources needed to stage a successful voter registration drive, including organizational support and additional volunteers in each city.
Being a HeadCount Touring Representative is hard work. You will need to set up well in advance of each concert and proactively register voters at each event. Tours last anywhere from three to five weeks. Driving distances between each event can be considerable. No one should consider applying for this position unless they are totally committed to the cause of voter mobilization and enjoy being in the concert tour environment.
Compensation: $200 per week plus bonus.
Requirements
- 21+
- Strong work ethic, maturity and sense of accountability
- Summer availability
- Natural leadership ability
- Commitment to following protocol
- Some relevant leadership experience
- Clean driving record
Team Leaders
Team Leaders are responsible for leading HeadCount volunteers and voter registration efforts at concerts and festivals. Most will be in charge of their home metropolitan area, while another dozen will travel with individual bands (as in 2004, when HeadCount sent teams on the road with Phish, The Dead and Dave Matthews Band).
Local team leaders represent the organization any time a HeadCount affiliated artist appears in the team’s metropolitan area, and traveling team leaders are in charge of a team of volunteers that travel from concert to concert in association with selected major artists. Team leaders organize and schedule teams of volunteers (using HeadCount’s Intranet database), train them in voter registration procedure and manage the entire process of setting up a voter registration table at an event. They are responsible for ensuring that HeadCount registers as many voters as possible and that we present ourselves in a professional manner. They are asked to be problem solvers, diplomats, motivators, and mentors, identifying solutions for each challenge that presents itself in the live concert environment and should always seek to set the bar higher. They must be accessible throughout the week to local volunteers as well as regional coordinators, file show reports after each event and also participate in weekly conference calls. Most of all, they must be true to the very definition of “team leader,” inspiring volunteers to work together toward the common goal of registering voters at concerts.
Positions available in most major U.S. Cities. Includes performance-based stipend of up to $1,000.
Requirements
- Strong work ethic, maturity and sense of accountability
- Flexible schedule, allowing them to be on-site at concerts when doors open
- Natural leadership ability
- Commitment to following protocol
- Some relevant leadership experience
Field Volunteer
Field volunteers are the driving force behind HeadCount. Since our launch in 2004, music fans from all walks of life have signed on to help register other fans to vote. Our entire organizational mission – using the multi-faceted power of music to enable voter registration and participation in democracy – ultimately is fulfilled through the interaction between our volunteers and thousands of other people. As the true frontline warriors in the fight for democracy, volunteers must be enthusiastic, good communicators and most of all reliable. They also must be willing to miss part (or, in some cases, all) of a concert and make HeadCount’s activities their priority the night of a concert. Volunteers are asked to be at the concert venue when doors open to the public, help set up the table, and then proactively register voters. At the end of the night, volunteers help break down the HeadCount table and organize voter registration forms. The commitment can be for one night or for 40. Most of our volunteer opportunities will occure] in 2008, but we encourage volunteers to sign up now, receive our sporadic e-mails and be first in line when volunteers spots are assigned next year.
Requirements
- Maturity, work ethic and responsibility
- Enthusiasm
- Willingness to proactively register voters, which includes approaching people directly and asking them to register to vote
- Willingness to learn voter registration rules and participate in HeadCount training
- Ability to arrive at venue before doors open to the public on nights you are volunteering
